I spent twenty years inside the nicotine cycle.

The first decade was heavy smoking. When I switched to vaping I thought I'd found the way out — instead I spent the next ten years as a heavy vape user, still chained to the chemical hit. I worked those same years as a product manager in consumer goods, and at times I helped build exactly the kind of products engineered to keep people coming back. I knew how the trap was built. Knowing the blueprint didn't make it any easier to walk out of.

When I was finally done with nicotine for good, I noticed something strange: my hand still reached for a vape. Not for the chemical — that decision was already made. For the pause.
